Campaign for Compensation for Child Abuse victims

August 2015

Odette Tovey, of Norrie Waite and Slater Solicitors, who specialises in Personal Injury and Child Abuse claims, has recently been campaigning to have the law changed with regard to the method in which the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) assess compensation for survivors of Child Sexual abuse and exploitation. In particular she has expressed disappointment in the fact that they often refuse any award at all to those who have unspent criminal convictions which relate to drug and/or alcohol offences triggered by the horrific abuse they experienced.

"These people are being treated no differently to everyday criminals who had a choice. These survivors were children who did not have a choice and consideration should be given to the severity of the crimes they committed, the reasons why they were committed and the level of impact the abuse has had on their mental health"

Odette expressed her concerns over this issue to the BBC in Autumn 2014 who then submitted freedom of information questions to  CICA and the Ministry of Justice.  Odette recently appeared on the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme and on BBC 2 Victoria Derbyshire Show to raise further awareness of this issue.
