Solicitors launch plain English legal website

This article appeared in the Sheffield Telegraph on the 1st of October 2009 and the Sheffield Star on the 28th October 2009.

Sheffield and Rotherham solicitors, Norrie Waite & Slater, website launchhas launched a new website aimed at providing detailed legal information to internet users in plain English, without the usual legal jargon.

The site, www.norriewaite.co.uk gives information on many areas of law and is aimed at the general public, rather than businesses.

Simon Goodlad, who developed the site with the assistance of lawyers throughout the firm says “We wanted to provide the type of information that clients ask us for on a day to day basis, so we have formatted the site to be as user friendly and intuitive to the man in the street as possible. All content had to pass a strict ‘no jargon’ test, with the rule that any legal terms which were unavoidable had to be fully explained”.

Within the site are pages such as a divorce frequently asked questions, information about your rights if arrested, as well as articles on more routine offences such as speeding.

One of the most popular pages is an article titled ‘The Myths about Motoring Offences’, where a solicitor examines popular urban myths about driving offences and whether there is any truth to them.

Thesolicitors website site is already quite large, with almost 100 pages of information, and more being added all the time. “We wanted to provide this information freely to the public, as many people are reluctant to go and see a solicitor because of perceived cost, although we do carry out a lot of work on a legal aid basis” says Simon.
